Underwater sound measurements of the Nova Innovation tidal turbine array at Bluemull Sound, Shetland Islands.
Overview
We measured underwater sound levels at the Nova Shetland Tidal Energy Array at Bluemull Sound in the Shetland Islands, following British standard IEC Standard 62600-40 Marine energy – Wave, tidal and other water current converters. Part 40: Acoustic characterization of marine energy converters (BSI 2019).
The Nova array consist of six tidal energy turbines, with 600 kW capacity. Data collection focussed on three direct-drive turbines, but a comparison was also made with three conventionally geared turbines. Weather conditions permitted fieldwork on two days during spring tides: 21st and 22nd February 2023.
